How to Properly Store and Maintain Your Riot Gear

Riot gear stored and maintained correctly lasts significantly longer than gear that is thrown in a bag after each deployment and checked only at the next annual inventory. Most gear failures are preventable with straightforward practices that take less time than dealing with failed equipment at a deployment.

Storage Conditions That Matter

The two environmental factors that degrade riot gear fastest are UV exposure and extreme heat. Patrol vehicle trunks in direct sunlight can reach temperatures that accelerate foam compression and polycarbonate degradation. If gear is staged in vehicles for extended periods, it should be in a bag that provides UV protection and kept out of direct sun when possible. The Haven Gear riot suit backpacks and wheeled deployable bags provide sealed storage that addresses both factors. View Bags →

Store helmets with face shields down or in a helmet bag to prevent scratching on the shield surface. Scratched face shields reduce visibility and create stress points that reduce impact resistance.

Cleaning After Deployment

Polycarbonate face shields should be cleaned with mild soap and water only. Solvent-based cleaners, including many commercial glass cleaners, attack polycarbonate and cause surface crazing that weakens the material. Use soft cloths without abrasive particles. Crazing from improper cleaning is a common reason otherwise undamaged face shields need replacement.

Suit panels should be wiped down after deployment. Avoid submerging padded components or machine washing panels unless the manufacturer specifies this is safe for the specific product.

Inspection Schedule

After each deployment: check face shield for any direct impact marks and replace if the shield took a hit, regardless of visible surface condition. Check stitching at all strap anchor points and joint connections. Verify all closures operate correctly.

Semi-annual: press firmly on all foam padding areas to check for compression. Foam that does not spring back has lost its energy-absorption capability. Pull firmly on all straps at their anchor points. Check the face shield surface under bright light for crazing. Inspect the helmet shell for deformation around the brow and crown.

Replacement Timing

Haven Gear stocks individual replacement components for every suit in the lineup. When a specific component reaches the end of its service life, replace that component rather than the full kit. Tracking which components have been replaced and when produces a maintenance record that supports both procurement planning and warranty documentation. View Replacement Parts →
