Must-Have Accessories for a Complete Riot Gear Kit

A riot suit without the right accessories is a foundation without a structure. The suit provides the primary protection platform, but the accessories, gloves, helmet, shield, baton, and bags, complete the operational kit. Leaving any of these out creates either a capability gap or a protection gap that will show up in the field.

Helmet: The Non-Negotiable

Head and face protection is the first accessory priority for any riot kit. The HG-HMAT riot helmet provides full-coverage head protection with a deployable face shield designed for sustained wear. A riot deployment without a helmet is not an acceptable configuration. Head injuries in crowd control operations account for a disproportionate share of serious injuries, and they are precisely the injuries that helmets prevent.

Gloves: Choose for the Assignment

The glove choice should be driven by the specific requirements of the deployment. Hard Knuckle gloves for high-physical-confrontation scenarios. Soft Knuckle for assignments where fine motor control is a priority. Iron Man for maximum protection in high-impact environments. No single glove configuration is optimal for every scenario. Having multiple configurations available lets commanders match glove choice to assignment requirements.

Shield: Formation and Individual Use

Haven Gear's polycarbonate riot shields, made from 4mm Paulson polycarbonate, provide optical clarity and high impact resistance. The XL configuration fits with gear transport in the XL gear bag. Having shields pre-staged and accessible means they are available when situations escalate to requiring them, not stored somewhere inaccessible.

Batons: Match Length to Role

The 24-inch tonfa, 28-inch straight baton, and 34-inch straight baton from Haven Gear's baton lineup serve different operational roles. Longer batons for standoff distance in formation use. Shorter configurations for close-quarters control. Having the right length available requires knowing what the assignment demands.

Police Chief Magazine has published gear configuration guidance noting that accessory standardization within a unit reduces training time and equipment errors in the field.
