NIJ 0104.02 for Riot Helmets

NIJ 0104.02 covers impact attenuation, face shield optical quality, and retention system performance. Helmets claiming NIJ compliance have been tested against specific force thresholds and optical quality requirements. GA294-2001 for Shields
The GA294-2001 standard covers riot gear components including helmets and shields. These cover different aspects of flame resistance: material ignition, flame spread, and heat transfer. Meeting all three provides more comprehensive coverage than any single standard alone.
What Standards Do Not Cover
Compliance standards test products under defined conditions on the day of testing. They do not measure what happens after two years of regular deployment, vehicle storage in temperature extremes, or cleaning with solvents that can degrade polycarbonate over time. Real-world durability extends beyond test-day performance, which is why field evaluation under actual deployment conditions produces information that spec sheet review alone cannot.
