Riot Gear Protection Standards: What They Mean and What to Look For

Riot gear carries compliance claims from several different standards bodies. Understanding what those standards actually test, and what they do not, helps departments make procurement decisions based on actual protection performance rather than marketing language.

NIJ 0104.02 for Riot Helmets

The National Institute of Justice publishes standards for law enforcement equipment including riot helmets. NIJ 0104.02 covers impact attenuation, face shield optical quality, and retention system performance. Helmets claiming NIJ compliance have been tested against specific force thresholds and optical quality requirements. Haven Gear riot helmets meet guidelines for NIJ 0104.02 and the international GA294-2001 standard.

GA294-2001 for Shields

The GA294-2001 standard covers riot gear components including helmets and shields. Paulson Manufacturing, which produces Haven Gear's polycarbonate shields in the USA, builds to GA294-2001 specifications. This standard covers both the polycarbonate material requirements and the structural requirements of the shield assembly as a whole, not just individual components in isolation.

BS 7971-3:2002 and Related Fire Standards for Suits

British Standard BS 7971-3:2002 covers protective clothing for riot and public order situations. Haven Gear's Enforcer MP fire resistance testing references BS 7971-3:2002 alongside DIN 53438 and ISO 6941. These cover different aspects of flame resistance: material ignition, flame spread, and heat transfer. Meeting all three provides more comprehensive coverage than any single standard alone.

What Standards Do Not Cover

Compliance standards test products under defined conditions on the day of testing. They do not measure what happens after two years of regular deployment, vehicle storage in temperature extremes, or cleaning with solvents that can degrade polycarbonate over time. Real-world durability extends beyond test-day performance, which is why field evaluation under actual deployment conditions produces information that spec sheet review alone cannot.
